Import template to existing ELAN file

Dear Han,

I have maybe a silly question but is there a “simple” way of adding an ELAN template file to an existing ELAN file containing annotations? Something like “add template file” or similar?

What I was doing so far was:

  1. Creating a new ELAN file with the template file
  2. Exporting tiers from already existing ELAN file into TextGrid
  3. Importing the TextGrid file into the new ELAN file that contains my customized controlled vocabulary

Maybe someone already asked that question and I’ve seen it. Still, would you mind telling me how to go about the merge between a

A function “add template file” isn’t there yet but is (high) on the “to do” list.
What might have a similar effect is to use the function Tier->Import Tiers… and then select the template file to import from. It will import the tiers and associated types and associated controlled vocabularies. It appeared recently that there are some shortcomings in this function, e.g. when it comes to external controlled vocabularies. The next version of ELAN will have a few improvements in this area but not yet a “import template” function.

I was wondering if there was another option in the meantime since the original question is 5 years old.

I would be happy for some feedback

Hello,

Yes, a function like discussed here earlier has been added in ELAN 5.3 (2018) (File->Multiple File Processing->Update Transcriptions with Template). As the label suggests, it works in batch or multiple file mode.
The release notes of all ELAN releases can be browsed and inspected from here, by the way!
