Sound problems with .mpg files

Hi,

I have a .mpg file that plays successfully in Windows Media Player and VLC Media Player, i.e. the picture quality and sound are normal. However, when I open this file in ELAN with a template, there is NO sound. How do I get the sound back in ELAN? Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks!

Difficult to tell. If you right click the video (in ELAN) and select the option “Show Filter Graph” what filters are in the list? Maybe you can post the list here?

Here are the filters:

Filter 1: Video Renderer
Pin 1: VMR Input0
Filter 2: Default DirectSound Device
Pin 1: Audio Input pin (rendered)
Filter 3: Sonic Cinemaster® VideoDecoder 4.1
Pin 1: Video in
Pin 2: Subpicture in
Pin 3: Video Out
Pin 4: ~SPU Out
Pin 5: ~CC Out
Filter 4: Sonic Cinemaster® Audio Decoder 4.2
Pin 1: Audio in
Pin 2: Audio Out
Filter 5: Sonic HD Demuxer
Pin 1: Input
Pin 2: Audio Out
Pin 3: Video Out
Filter 6: //Nimhirp-ds1/vidlibrary$/Videos/Toddler pilot/07092011_Fin.MPG
Pin 1: Output

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the graph. At least there seems to be a complete audio chain, up to the sound device. I’m not familiar with the Sonic codecs so I can’t say anything about that, but the ELAN media player on Windows tries to create the “standard” filter graph for MPEG-1 files. The standard graph looks like this:

Filter 1: Video Renderer
Pin 1: VMR Input0
Filter 2: Direct Sound Renderer
Pin 1: Audio Input pin (rendered)
Filter 3: MPEG1 Video Decoder
Pin 1: Input
Pin 2: Output
Filter 4: MPEG1 Audio Decoder
Pin 1: XForm In
Pin 2: XForm Out
Filter 5: MPEG1 Splitter
Pin 1: Input
Pin 2: Audio
Pin 3: Video
Filter 6: Source
Pin 1: Output

Maybe your files are not MPEG-1 and maybe the creation of the default graph failed for some reason. What type of MPEG files do you have and which Windows version is this?

(All this of course assuming that the volume level is not by accident set to 0 in ELAN)

Thanks for your help, Han! I think you’re right that the problem must have been the type of mpeg file. I converted it from its original .mpg file to .mpeg, and that worked with both sound and picture in ELAN. Thanks again.
