This is strange, if none of the most frequently used formats works, and it’s not so easy to advise.
A bit more information might help: what is the version of the Mac OS, did it ever work on that computer, does this happen with File->Open… or File->New… or both?
Maybe the log contains more information than shown on screen? After the error message go to View->View Log… the last messages in the list might indicate some Exception or Error?
I have the same problem (I’m trying to open an mpeg-2 file in Mac OS 10.8.5 (starting ELAN on 32-bit mode did not help).
Below is the log I got. Thanks in advance for your help!

For MPEG-2 it is still necessary to install the MPEG2Component for QuickTime in order to get it working ELAN. This is because ELAN on Mac OS still depends on the older QTKit framework. So while you might be able to play MPEG-2 files in the (“new”) QuickTime Player, for ELAN you still need this extra component.
This seems like a different problem; at least if other formats like mpg-1 and mp4 work normally on your Mac.

I’m sorry, I have no clue! There is a message in the log “Invalid movie: format not supported” which in this case is surely not an accurate message. But it indicates, I think, that something is wrong on a “lower level”, where ELAN interacts with the QuickTime libraries. But I’ve no idea what.
And you tried on another Mac with the same result?
Just to be sure, the directory structure within the ELAN folder is intact? E.g. in the “lib” folder there is (among many other files) a file “libJavaQTMovieView.jnilib”?
Just to give you an update on a solution I found: I downloaded the latest version of ELAN and converted my video file to mp4. That did the trick! (ELAN-CorpA didn’t work, though). Hopefully this will work with other MAC operating systems.
Hi Josefina and Han,
I am having the exact same problem. Running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. Get the same error regardless of Elan version 4.7.3 vs 4.8 vs 4.9.1
The last four entries in the log are the same as above user and I tried all the other solutions mentioned above. Has there been any resolve to this issue other than converting the video files to another format (which is really not ideal when trying to open hundreds of elan files that worked in previous versions on an older OS on a different computer).
I believe there are two different problems here? In the case of Gabriela MPEG-2 didn’t work but mp4 does. In Josefina’s case nothing seems to work, not mp4, not .mov etc. Rachel, what is your situation, are you working with MPEG-2 files that you can’t get to work?
It’s still unclear what the problem is in Josefina’s case (none of the format works), so no resolve there yet.
Hi Han,
I am working with .mov files that were exported in H264 Linear PCM.
These files used to work in older versions of Elan (4.6) but in Elan 4.9.1 with OS 10.10.5 I get the Cocoa QT error as reported above.
I can re-export the video files as H264 ACC and then they will work. (I have hundreds of video files I would have to re-export though). Is there a solution to this that you can see? Would greatly appreciate any help!
Ok, thank you for this clarification, then at least we know that this is an isolated, format specific issue. And if I understand it correctly these files don’t work in any ELAN version on Yosemite, but worked in ELAN versions on an older Mac OS X version. So, the difference is not in ELAN (I think nothing changed fundamentally in that media player of ELAN, so that makes sense) but in the OS?
That doesn’t mean that I can explain this new problem; I wonder whether it could be that H264 with Linear PCM used to be supported, but now not anymore. Seems unlikely. And those .mov files do play in QuickTime on 10.10.5 I suppose?
Maybe I can produce such a .mov file and test it on my 10.10.5 Mac (or maybe you can share one file?)
HI Han,
I’ve been trouble shooting the past few weeks and trying to find a work around with no luck. And the problem has gotten worse to the point where files that I had previously gotten to work despite the error are now opening but allowing no new annotations or playing of media. (My problem seems to be similar to the post by pawnee.lakota on 11/20)
I have put together a folder of sample files/stimuli for you to share. The video files are too large to email but I can try drop boxing it. Do you have an email I can send to or can you contact me of the forum and I will send you more specifics about what is going on? My email address is rmr238 at cornell dot edu
On OS 10.10.5 Yosemite:
• Files created in the last year using these export settings work without issue in either Elan 4.8 or 4.9-1.b:
• .Mov- Codec: H.264, ACC, Timecode (typical file size 500 mb)
• .Wav- waveform audio, sample rate 48,000, 16 bits/sample
• Files created prior to 2013 using media with these export settings don’t work in either version of elan. (Note- these files worked without issue in previous versions e.g. 4.6/4.7)
• .Mov- Codec: Linear PCM, H.264 (typical file size 1.37 gb)
• .Wav – waveform audio, sample rate 48,000, 16 bits/sample
When opening ‘problem’ files we get the warning: “No player could be created for : file.wav. The Cocoa QT player cannot handle the file. Quicktime/QT exception
If I tell it to open the file anyway- remove the .mov file and then relink the files- I could get it to work with just the .wav file for a while. However, now I get the same error for both the .mov and .wav files .
If I say okay and force it to open anyway sometimes the file will still play sound (other times not), but typically the coding tiers will freeze and not allow any new annotations (almost as if it’s treating it as un-editable and read-only).
These files will also not work in OS X 10.9.5 in Elan 4.6 (where they previously did- I have not performed an OS update on this computer).
It appeared that the above problems were caused by external attributes attached to (some of) the files. Removing those attributes using the “xattr” command solved the problems.
It doesn’t work with mp4 files that have codecs H.264, Linear PCM.
It works with mp4 files having codecs H264, AAC.
(You can see which codecs your video has by right-clicking on the file and “Get info”, then “More info”).
Linear PCM is an audio codec. To make your video work in ELAN, you would have to convert it to the AAC audio codec. I will post an update when I find a way to do that (the VLC converter doesn’t do that particular codec).
This is about OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and ELAN 4.9.3
