Elan 4..4.0 Mac OSX freezing when I try and open files

Whenever I try to open a file, the application opens but then seems to load forever before freezing. I then need to force quit the program. I am using a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.7.5with a core i7 processors (2.7ghz) and 4GB ram. Is this an issue with the program, the files or my computer not being powerful enough?

Could it be that this problem has to do with the media file format?
A few things can be done to test this and other possibilities:

  • does ELAN launch normally if you don’t launch it by opening a file?
  • if so, can you create a new document based on an old fashioned mpeg 1 file (i.e. one of the example files from our download page)?
  • after the crash, are there error messages in the log file (user_home/Library/Preferences/ELAN/elan_n.log)?

The MacBook is powerful enough alright.

The problem isn’t with the media file format. I am able to create a new file and open the media file i need (.mov file)

I have tried deleting and reinstalling as well as multiple versions (4.1.2, 4.3.3 and 4.4.0)

Elan launches normally, but as soon as I open an existing Elan file it just freezes. It will also sometimes freeze when i try to create a new file. There is no error file in the log - the program doesn’t crash - I have to force quit it.

If it were only existing files that cause the freeze, I would ask you to send me a file so that I can check whether there is something wrong with it. You’re still welcome to do so (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl) but if new files also cause the program to hang, the problem is probably not in the existing eaf files.
And you might still send me the log file, even if there are no clear error messages in it. Maybe there are other clues in it; because if there is no problem with the media files and no problem with the eaf files, I have no idea what could be the problem then.
Do you have other Mac’s or PC’s around that you could compare with?

Hi, was this situation ever resolved? I have a similar problem, and have for several versions of Elan (can’t remember when it started). I can open (multiple) Elan files from the Finder, but not through the Open command in Elan, nor by clicking on a multiple file search result. When I do either of these things, I get the spinning beach ball and have to Force Quit Elan. Not being able to open files from a search result is particularly hampering, and it sure would be nice to get a fix.
Thanks,
Kevin

I am currently running Elan on a unibody MacBook Pro (mid 2009) with OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks, but the problems started when I had Snow Leopard.

This has probably not been resolved then. The problem was and is that we’ve not been able to reproduce these kind of crashes. Your problem description helps. It is not clear whether your situation is exactly the same as some other reported situations. I don’t recall having heard of freezing after clicking on a search result (which is very inconvenient indeed).
We have been thinking what exactly could make the difference because roughly the same happens when you do File->Open and when you double click an .eaf in the Finder.
You may send me crash logs if you wish and the above mentioned ELAN log file as it is after a crash. Maybe there is something in common in the crash files of different computers… (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl).
