When to use "Tier > Create Annotations from Overlaps"?

I need some real-world example to better understand pleas. Many thanks in advance!

Hello,

Create Annotations from Overlaps can be used for example to determine speech overlaps between two tiers. It is developed to automatically detect annotation overlaps between tiers.

If you create two tiers and annotations on those tiers, then you could use the Overlaps function and the criteria’s to produce a resulting tier from these tiers.

You can find the details of those criteria in this documentation.

I know the functionalities. But I don’t know why to use it. Any real-world examples, please?

Hello,

Maybe there will are some users who are willing to share how they use this function in their research.
Generally, it’ll probably concern studies in which co-occurring events are of interest, events or modalities of different types that have been annotated on two or more tiers. This function can then be useful for quantitative analyses etc. It is probably possible to find papers in which this plays a role.

You don’t provide much context about the background of your question(s), what you aim to achieve in your research or where you consider to use ELAN for. In general some background is useful for anyone who considers to try to help by posting on the forum.
