I’m using an orthography that includes an underlined “ai” as well as “ai” without underline to indicate two different sounds. I have read that ELAN doesn’t allow underlining in transcriptions, but I’m wondering if it is possible to do this using Unicode characters. The Unicode character we use for the underline is 0332. Is there some way to add these underline characters in ELAN transcriptions?
Update: I found out that I can copy and paste the characters from another program and it works. However, I’d still like to know if there is a way to enter the underline characters directly in ELAN.
Most people will prefer another solution, depending on the platform (OS) one is working on, but this is how it could work in ELAN: when entering text in the annotation edit box and needing the combining low line 0332, right click the edit box and from the context menu select “ipa-ext (IPA Extended)”. This will bring up a virtual keyboard. Typing the sequence “[rk” should now produce the 0332 unicode character. Then right click the edit box again to switch back to the system keyboard. So, not particularly convenient!
