Trouble with special characters when inputted from Mac UI

Hi I am using ELAN 5.7, I am attempting to transcribe Spanish.

When entering a special Spanish character such as ñ or ó in a tier name, the tier name text box will freeze and I am unable to enter more characters. I have to close it, open it back up and continue adding the rest of the characters.

I am using a MacBook Pro, and to enter a special character such as ñ, I simply push and hold the “n” key and then a dialog will appear and allow me to choose between ñ and ń. The same goes for other special characters.

It’s worse when doing annotations and transcriptions. When entering an annotation or text in transcription mode, I can’t even put the special character in, only the base character will appear (so if I attempt to enter ñ only n will appear) and then the segment will freeze, and I can’t add any further text, even when deflecting the tier and re-editing it. I have to restart elan entirely in order to add additional characters to the specific annotation or transcription cell.

The alternative method of using the option key on the Mac keyboard does seem to work, I don’t get the same freeze-ups. But it would be great if the above mentioned method worked.

I don’t know if we can do anything about this, but I could try to reproduce the problem and look at the events received.
Which macOS version do you have?

Mojave 10.14.5

Ok, I can reproduce the problem, I han’t seen this yet.
I haven’t had time to try to debug this, but since the tier name text field and the annotation edit box are regular Java text fields (with slight modification/customization), I would be surprised if there is anything we can do about this (without causing problems on other platforms).
Maybe there is some system of Java runtime configuration setting that could help, but I haven’t found it yet.

Hi,

I’m having the same problem. Are there any updates on possible solutions for this issue?
@wangana have you maybe found a workaround?

I am also using ELAN 5.7 and Mojave 10.14.6…
