Trouble with .MOV in ELAN

BACKGROUND: I converted some files from Pupil Player from an .mp4 into .mov as the original .mp4 were unplayable on ELAN using the video exporting function on Pupil Player.

PROBLEM: These videos are slow, and trying to move ahead only causes it to freeze for a while until it decides to start playing again . Furthermore, while moving forward frame by frame has no issues, if I try to move 1 frame back, it moves it 4 or 5 frames back instead. This culminates into an issue where I believe the time and video become unsynchronized. This means that when making my annotations, I’m constantly unsure of where to tag, as it jumps between 2 different times.

Any help would be appreciated!

I would advise to convert back to mp4 (or better re-encode the original mp4’s) following the guidelines you can find in this media encoding guide. Especially take note of the remarks on “b-frames”. (In short: it is probably best to either set b-frames to 0 (zero) or produce a “I-frame only” videos by setting GOP to 1.)
