I am unable to get audio from ELAN to open in Praat with any version of ELAN that will work on my MacBook Pro. I am running macOS 11.4 with a 1.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5.
Whenever I remove the ELAN preferences folder in ~/Library/Preferences/ and attempt to open a file in Praat from ELAN, I am asked to find the executable. After selecting this, ELAN opens Praat, but no file is loaded. If Praat is already open, nothing happens.
However, when instead running Simple-ELAN_1.3, the audio opens properly. It seems that if the settings will permit Simple-ELAN_1.3 to open audio into Praat, then the issue lies in the ELAN software for MacOS.
I have installed the most recent version of ELAN (6.2) on both my Linux and Windows machines and this is not an issue for either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Hello,
Thanks for reporting. The strange thing is that on my macOS system last week (when I had to compile a new version of the related library) opening a selection in Praat worked, but when I tried this morning it didn’t anymore. I tried in 6.1, 6.0, 5.9: the same symptoms you describe. Then I tried in 5.8 and got a macOS message window asking me to grant permission to ELAN to interact with Praat. After allowing this, it worked as it used to do. After that it also worked in the newer versions I mentioned.
We still have to figure out the exact nature of the problem and what to do about it, but it seems the problem concerns sending AppleEvents to another application. We have to find out what can be done to trigger the message so that the user can grant permission.
If I’m correct, if you open System Preferences->Security&Privacy->Privacy tab->Automation category, in the list you’ll have Simple-ELAN listed, with Praat in the sublist of apps to perform actions within. Is that correct?
Once we have a solution or workaround, I’ll post it here.

Hello,
I just uploaded a new version of ELAN 6.2 for macOS, with hopefully this time the right “entitlements”. When for the first time trying to open a selection in Praat from within ELAN, macOS should ask the user to grant permission. After that it should work without the popup message.
Maybe you can download ELAN 6.2 again and try and verify if it now works?

Hi Han,
This seems to have done the trick. The popup message occurred and now ELAN is opening Praat with the audio. Thank you for getting this corrected so quickly.
Great, thanks for the confirmation!
