Simple Elan for Mac - bug report + what are the shortcut keys?

Hi Han,

Hope you’re doing well! I have just started using Simple Elan and I love it. It works fine on my windows laptop. However, on my office iMac, the player does not work sometimes (using .wav audiofiles). Sometimes it does, but when it doesn’t, it simply does not react to clicking the play button nor “play selection” button. I have OS X 10.11.6.

Also, I wondered what the shortcut keys are on a Mac. The Help-file provides only the shortcut keys for the Windows version. I have tried some combinations without success. In fact, actions such as “Merge with next annotation” seem to be even absent from mouse-controlled menus, at least I have not found them

Hi Pablo,
Yes, I’m fine, I hope you too.
I’m afraid I cannot help you with the audio player sometimes working, sometimes not. Some people reported similar problems occurring when no audio output device (headphones or speakers) was connected, or when a specific USB device was connected etc.

There is a note in the Help file concerning shortcut keys on macOS: in general the Windows Ctrl key in shortcut combinations should be replaced by the macOS Command key (main exception: Ctrl+Space to play/pause, this is the same on macOS). The Windows ALT key is the macOS Option key.
So “Merge with next annotation” should be Command+Shift+DownArrow on macOS etc.

The right mouse button context menus are a bit tricky; if you click on any non-selected annotation it should appear. If you have an annotation active and the text editor is activated (there is a blinking caret), the menu will only appear if you click on the grey area showing the time values. The text edit field “consumes” the mouse event, we haven’t found a way around that yet unfortunately.

Best,
Han

Hi Han,

Thanks for your quick reply. It may be that both issues are related. Now the Mac-shortcuts work. The combinations with Command key, Option key, etc. did not work before. Today, at first they did not work, until I tried several shortcuts and buttons on the screen, and then at some point the rest worked too. Something similar happens with the play-interface. I opened and closed the program some time, different files, different actions, and then at some point the play-buttons work. I don’t know exactly what is the action that triggers the play-buttons and the shortcut keys to work, but I will keep an eye on it. I haven’t changed anything with regard to devices (audio, USB, etc).

Best,
Pablo
