Hi there,
I’m using Windows 8.1 Pro, and have not been able to successfully download and use versions 5.8 and 5.9. The last version that I can use is 5.7, which saves into Program Files (x86).
Version 5.9 saves into AppData>Local>Programs, but when I try to open any .eaf file, nothing happens.
Hi,
I believe even when installing without administrator permissions, it is possible to choose where to install ELAN (although not in Program Files)?
I wonder whether the problem has anything to do with the location where ELAN is installed. If I understand correctly you can launch ELAN 5.9 but if you open a file an error occurs (behind the scenes)? There might be useful information in the log (View->View Log…) at the moment that nothing happens? (I assume the system is 64-bit?)
Thanks for your quick reply, Han. For ELAN 5.9 (and 5.8) the program window does not even open (I guess that, to view the log, I’d have to have an ELAN window open first? Unless there’s some other way of doing that). I tried uninstalling 5.9 and downloading 5.7, and I was then able to launch the program and open any files that I wanted.
I notice that the logo for 5.7 is different (a grey circle for 5.7, compared with 5.9) but that might not be significant!
Should I try moving the location of where ELAN is saved? I tried saving directly to Program Files but an Error 5 came up.
Might be there is a log file (but probably not); it should be in the ELAN data and preferences folder.
There is a version of ELAN (5.9) that you can just unzip and then run by double clicking the ELAN.exe (no installation required). You could do that (in Downloads or C:\Temp or so), just to try and just to see if the problem has anything to do with the location.
I’ve saved from the zip folder into my downloads - is the highlighted file the .exe file? If so, I’m having the same problem - when I double click the blue ‘loading’ circle appears for a split second and then nothing happens/opens/launches.
Yes, that’s the executable. So, it hasn’t to do with the location.
Did you check whether there is a log file?
Yes, if you would make all file extensions visible you would see file elan0.log till elan12.log. What is important is the modification date, so elan0.log, elan1.log and/or elan2.log might be worth looking into (in a text editor).
Is it ok for me to share those files with you using your mpi email?
Yes, sure (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl)!
