I am attaching to this tread cause I noticed that my problem is very similar to the previous ones. Basically, after working for several days on the same file, and after a few crashes, ELAN won’t open the file anymore, while I am able to open other files.
I had a look at the log file and my best guess is that this has to do with this error message
Error: cvc-id.1: There is no ID/IDREF binding for IDREF ‘a36979’.
In fact, if I open the file on a text editor, the annotation seems to be misplaced, meaning it does not occur after 36978, but somewhere else in the file. I added a screenshot if it is of any use.
If it may help, I think this occurred while working in the interlinearization mode: when parsing the file, I noticed that in many cases the parser went back to some previous step, or parsed the same step several times.
This sometimes occurs and so far we haven’t discovered what the cause or causes might be. I don’t think it really has to do with the working mode, at least people have run into the same problem who never use the interlinearization mode.
If this is the only missing or empty ID/IDREF you can fix the file by deleting the annotation with ID=“a36978”, from the opening to the closing tags (inclusive). Before doing that it’s best to search the file for references to “a36978”; if there are any, removing this annotation will just result in the next IDREF binding error.
Just wanted to pop in here and say I encounter this problem from time to time, it seems to happen to EAF files that I don’t open for a few months.
Deleting the annotation with the indicated ID’s in a text editor never works for me because (even if’s the only instance of the ID in the file) there’s always another one, and the log only shows you one at a time and I have to end up deleting a number of annotations just to get it to open and go and put them all back in later.
My mitigation strategy for the mean time is just to use SayMore to extract the transcription and translation files as subtitles and simply recreate the eaf file and import the subtitle files. This only works because most of my ELAN files have only transcription and translation tiers, if there were other tiers with other data, they would be lost. Hoping we can get a fix to this one day.

Although we don’t know exactly how or why this problem occurs (and, following that, how to solve it), I assume that this happens while the file is being written, is being saved.
I would be very surprised if this problem would arise depending on how long it has or has not been opened (but then again, I don’t really know).
