I’m getting the attached error when opening a project with elan 5.9. Is this a known problem?

The file you try to open as a media file (and for which ELAN tries to create a media player) is an ELAN .eaf file (which is not a media file). If you try to do that with File->New… and selecting an .eaf file, newer versions of ELAN try to detect that and open the .eaf file rather than treating it as a media file.
If you open an existing .eaf file and you get the above message, the best thing to do is, after the shown message, go to Edit->Linked Files…, select the .eaf file in the table and click Remove and Apply.
If you know which media file(s) should be linked (but currently aren’t in the list), you can add them here too.
