Missing waveforms in .eaf

Hello I have a rather urgent issues as its with working inside a crime lab project. I have the .eaf files and the .wav files for ELAN both in the same folder. When I create “new” in the dropdown menu, select add .eaf, it opens the file, but there are no longer waveforms. All I get are the markers I set for each tier. That’s all. They are both in the same folder, .eaf and .wav. Same name, I have redownloaded, deleted everything including the program, re-uploaded everything and re-downloaded everything. I am not in a desperate hurry. Any ideas or help would be so appreciate. Thank you!

Hello,

The File->New… menu option is intended for creating a new transcription file, the files to add in that window are supposed to be media files. If an .eaf file is selected instead, ELAN nowadays detects that and opens the eaf instead of creating a new one.
The File->Open… is intended for opening existing .eaf files.

The .eaf file and the .wav don’t have to have the same name (anymore, maybe that was the case a very long time ago). If you open an eaf file you can best go to Edit->Linked File… to see if a .wav file is linked and what its name is. If no .wav is linked you can add it there too.

There can also be other reasons why the waveform is not show, e.g. the Signal viewer might be ‘hidden’ via the View->Viewer menu.

TY Han for writing so quickly. I am brand new to segmenting for any of this. We already have files that have the info in them, so we were told to have the .wav and the .eaf file in the same folder or it would not work. I nearly had the last file segmenting, saving every few minutes, habitual for any document or file.

Suddenly, all the waveforms were gone. I did everything for two days solid no sleep because it was imperative. Somehow, by accident the files showed up, but they were all without segments.

Also, being in segmentation mode is supposed to be an easy thing, it is not on a MacBook Pro 2023. You are supposed to be able to select the segment you want, hit enter and bam the segment lines appear you can shorten or take the back end and make less.

However, if you accidentally start segmenting the wrong tier, there is no way I could find and no one on the team knows, to copy and past that piece of segment into the correct tier. You have to delete i, which often that is grey’d out and you cannot. Pain in the hinder.

And, do you know anything about this part? I finally figured out, if I draw the lines backwards, meaning I highlight the end of what i want segmented, to the beginning, it makes it purple. I hit enter, sometimes it works, others it does not. But when it does work consistently, it will either draw the line backward meant left to right. But If I highlight it left to right, it won’t put markers in at all.

So now, I highlight left to right, sometimes the lines show up to the left of the right part of the marking like this | | All that has been highlighted in-between the two markers there. But If I had highlighted the right bar and gone to the left bar, sometimes it will make the mark from the right bar to somewhere further right of the right bar, other times, it will just join a bar that could be a few minutes earlier, and it is then one big line. It never ever takes the section I have highlighted. Anyone have any clues about this? I wish I could attach a video! Thanks! TJ

Hello,

It seems different problems are being mixed now. It’s unclear what happens with the waveform. If all waveforms, in all files, disappear, the only reason I can think of, is that the Signal viewer (waveform viewer) is set to invisible. You don’t say anything about that, whether you checked that or not. If the menu item is selected there could be error messages. Without information about these points there is no way to help you make the waveforms visible again.

About the other problems: it seems you’re working in segmentation mode, but from your workflow description it seems you would be better off to create annotations in Annotation mode. There, it is also possible to drag annotations from one tier to another (holding down the Option key).
If you want to share screenshots or videos, you can send them (or a link to them) to me by email (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl).

Hi
i have the same problem – Waveform is not visible. Where can I find the Signal Viewer?

Hi,
The waveform can be made visible or hidden via the menu View->Viewer->Signal Viewer.
There can be several reasons for the waveform not being visible, more information about the setup (e.g. is a .wav file linked or only video) would be required to figure that out.
