I am macOS Sonoma 14.5 using ELAN 6.8. I got a problem using the media clipping function. I couldn’t find the ELAN folder in the Preferences folder in the library, so I created a “ELAN” folder in Preferences folder and placed the .scpt files and the “clip-media.txt” file in the folder that I created. (Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>ELAN)
But the warning said the script could not been found.
Where should I put the the .scpt files and the clip-media.txt file?
Hello,
When you are in the Finder (so the Finder menu is active in the menu bar), open the Go menu and then press the Option key, an additional menu item Library will appear. If you select that one and navigate to its sub-folder Preferences, it will contain the ELAN folder to place the files in.
This is a per user Library folder (/User/<username>/Library) which is semi-hidden.

Thank you! It works in ELAN but I can’t find the clipped media. When I opened the selection, this pops up.
To verify if I understand the situation correctly: did you start with Save Selection as .eaf with the option to also clip the media file(s) and when opening the saved .eaf, this is the message you see?
In principle the clips should be in the same folder as the saved .eaf. Did you see the QuickTime Player window while clipping?
Yes, I started with Save Selection as .eaf and checked the option clip the media file(s).
But I didn’t see the QuickTime Player window while clipping
It would be good to verify if clipping as such works, separately from the Save Selection function.
If you have a selection of a few seconds and choose File->Export As->Media clip using script... you’ll probably see a Save As dialog (so you know where the output should go) and then should see the QuickTime Player exporting the clip.
Two more notes:
- the first time the script is called,
macOS might (should?) show a little dialog asking for permission to run the script (I’m not sure if it is possible that this dialog is hidden by e.g. the ELAN window)
- did you modify the
clip-media.txt to have the right path to the .scpt file? (Unfortunately the clipping doesn’t work without some configuration efforts.)
I modified the clip-media.txt file and the script is running. I can see QuickTime Player exporting the clip now.
However, after I selected the location in the save as dialog and finished the process, there was no .mov file created in the designated location.
Then I’m out of options. I’ve even updated my macOS to Sonoma to rule out that that could make a difference, but it still seems to work. So, assuming you’re exporting to a folder where you have write permissions (I’m not sure if QT would show an error message in case you haven’t), I have no clue.
Sorry!
