I am working on a linguistic project and will be grateful if you could help me. I want to create a new child tier. However, when I create it and I want to select the linguistic type I have created before, it just does not appear as an option. It seems that the option of linguistic type I want for this specific tier is not available for it, and I don’t know how to make it available.
The list of linguistic types is updated after selecting the target parent tier. The type of the parent tier puts some constraints on the type of the child tier, therefor the list of available types is updated after selection of the parent tier. As long as no parent tier has been selected, only tier types suitable for top-level tiers are listed.
Hi Han,
Thank you very much for your answer and for the patience in answering. I understand partially your point. I would like to share pictures of my screen for you to help me better. In my point of view, there is no logical explanation for my problem, if I consider the “constraints” of the parent tier, because the linguistic types available don’t match with the ones of the parent tier (attitude and affect).
I am trying to create a child tier, for the parent tier “affect”, whose parent tier “attitude”. One of the child tier of “attitude” is polarity which uses the same linguistic type than the one I would like to create. Then I couldn’t understand why this linguistic type doesn’t appear as a possibility.
Waiting for your answer.
First of all, apologies for pointing out what clearly was already known to you.
Based on your screen capture alone, I think it is not really possible to explain why a certain type does not show up. The “Stereotype” property of the types of “attitude”, “affect” and “polarity” cannot be inferred from the picture. Therefor, theoretically, “attitude” and “polarity” could be of type “Time Subdivision” e.g. while “affect” is of type “Symbolic Association” and then the type “polarity” cannot be used for a child tier of “affect”.
Maybe this is, again, not the explanation for the problem, but then it would maybe be best if you could send the .eaf (without media) to me (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl) for inspection? Otherwise it is difficult to tell what is going on.
Hi, Han.
You don’t have to apologize at all. Your help is very welcome and you are in the right direction. Actually, each linguistic type, related to each tier, is different. You are right, this must be the reason why the options are limited. Anyway, I would like to share my file with you, for you to see clearly. However the forum doesn’t allow me to share this king of file.
I am afraid that I could only modify the stereotype if I delete my tier and annotation or if I create a new linguistic type with the right stereotype. In this case, which stereotype should I choose?
