I am new to ELAN and I do not know how to set up a transcription so that I can add the symbols required for conversation analytic transcription e.g underlining individual letters to indicate stress; adding up and down arrows; upside down question marks; degree signs.
Underlining letters as a (font/display) style is not supported; underlining can only be achieved by using combining diacritical marks (or by using single unicode characters that are underlined). Putting in the other marks might work similar as how you would do that in other programs, like in a simple text editor.
In ELAN itself there is an input method called “ipa-ext” that probably contains most of the characters you need. (Right click in the text edit box and you should see it in the list. Whether it works out of the box depends on the system you’re working on.) But this is probably not the most convenient way to enter text into the annotations.
