I am working on annotating a series of cartoon episodes. The structure is partially identical across episodes (e.g. the opening sequence is always the same), and the tiers are also identical since I imported them from the first file into the others.
I have fully annotated the first episode and I would like to reuse some of those annotations in the next ones, to avoid repeating the same work.
I tried copying and pasting annotations, which works, but I was wondering:
Is there a way to import multiple layers of annotations (e.g. all tiers, or a subset of tiers) from one file to another? Ideally, I would like to import either time-bound selections or even the entire file, and then remove the tiers/annotations I don’t need.
Is there a recommended workflow for this, or a function in ELAN that would make it more efficient than copy–paste?
You can explore the File > Merge Transcriptions function. This imports tiers with annotations and saves everything in a new file.
You can use the fully annotated file as the second source, and the file which has next cartoon episode as a first file. You do not need to select any other options in here.
In the next dialog , the tiers of the first source are shown as a reference; these don’t have to be selected because the first source is always copied completely along with the linked media files. You can select the tiers that needs to imported from the "select tiers from second source ".
The newly created file will have the linked media files from the first source and the tiers along with annotations imported from the second source.
