Normally it should be possible to use .avi files in ELAN. If you choose File -> New in ELAN and then “All Files” in the “Files of Type” drop down box, you should be able to select and add an .avi file to a new document.

Hello,
I’m trying to import some avi files to ELAN but its impossible to open them. I can select and add the files but the videos just do not open. My old annotations from avi files works just fine, but impossible to create new ones. I’m using ELAN 4.9.4 and I have a Windows Vista.
Thank you
What I understand of AVI is that it is a container format that can contain almost anything. So, one AVI might work in ELAN another might not, there’s not much we can say or do about it.
If you want you can post a part of the log file (the part concerning the creation of a media player) after opening one of the (failing) AVI files, maybe it contains a clue about why it fails.
But maybe it is better to convert the files to e.g. mp4 anyway.
Thank you for your reply, Han. I was having problems to read the mp4 videos in the fisrt place, that’s why I converted to AVI. I solved the problem just by changing computers (and the mp4 viedos works just fine). So problem fixed
Thank you so much again.
