Dear ELAN users:
I taught a linguistic anthropology class this semester and taught students to use ELAN the first time. Students submitted their ELAN assignments. When I clicked their .eaf files, it kept showing messages such as “Please locate the media file…” I opened files I created myself without any problem.

ELAN stores an absolute path and a relative path to the media file. If no procedure has been agreed with the students, it can not be assumed that either the absolute location or the relative location still works once you have received their eaf files and stored them (somewhere) on your computer. The result can be that you have to locate the media file on your drive the first time you open those files.
