file fine, but just won't play

Hello,
I was working on an Elan file when suddenly I noticed flashing in a section ofthe transcription half of the page (the bottom half). When I re-opened the file, everything was normal, except that when I clicked on ‘play’ the video would not play. Everything else seems to be working just fine - I can see the video image, the transcription in there - it’s just that when I press the play button, nothing happens (it just becomes the symbol for the pause button). I also cannot press the ‘play selection’ button either - it doesn’t play the highlighted segment. I was wondering if someone can tell me what is wrong, as this problem means that I can no longer use the file!
Many thanks in advance,
Mark

There may be 2 tests you can do to find out what is wrong:

  • open the eaf in ELAN, remove the video(s) via Edit -> Linked Files and see if you can “play” that particular segment
  • create a new transcription based on the same video(s) and check if you can play it normally and can play a selection at roughly the same position

There might also be error messages in the log file after the exceptional behavior (
If you think the eaf file has become invalid, you can send it to me, I could run a check on it.

Hi Han
Thank you for your help. I removed the video, and file does play. What does this mean? Is there any way of now being able to use my file as normal - i.e. to get it to play, with the video?
Many thanks,
Mark

HI, I would think that the annotation file is ok in that case. Have you tried what happens if you create a new annotation file based on this video? Do you run into the same problems then? Anything in the log file?
Are you running Windows or Mac? Has anything changed to the system recently (software updates, new codecs)?

Han

Hi Han,
When I create a new annotation file with this video, everything is fine.
I have tried to use the annotation file which is causing me problems, on my computer at home. I encounter the same problem as I do at university - the file won’t play, although eveything else seems to be present (i.e. annotation and video image). Both computers are PCs. I don’t think this would be due to a computer update, as the problem occurred one afternnoon when I was in the middle of working on the file.
I have just had a look at the file again, and there is also a problem when I try to use the button at the bottom of the screen to slide forward along the time line.
Where can I find the log file? I’m sorry for sounding so ignorant.
Many thanks for your help, once again.

Hi Mark,

Given all this information, there is probably a problem with that eaf file after all. Could you send it to me for inspection(han.sloetjes at mpi.nl)?
By the way: the log file can be found in

Hello,

I have a similar problem. Several months ago I started working on a transcription. Yesterday I saw that there was a new version of the Elan, and I downloaded it.
However, now I cannot work normally on it. When I click on “play selection” then the “normal” play doesn’t run, and then I have to restart the document.
I am running Windows XP.
I did what Han said, I removed the video, and file does play. Regarding the log file, where can I find it?

Thanks,

Jordina
