Errors with Java and/or Quicktime?

Hello!

I’m posting this on behalf of a few students who are working with us faculty in the linguistics department at Gallaudet. All of these students are working on a Mac (I believe their settings are: OSX 10.8.2, latest Java update as well as QuickTime). They’ve been reporting problems with opening the .eafs (some after having worked on ELAN on their computers without any problems). The error message that comes up is some variant of this: “no player could be created for (path name). Could not initialize class player.JayvaQTMoviePlayer, Could not initialize class quicktime.QTsession. Could not create any media player for (path name). Could not create a Cocoa QT based player for (path name).”

On one computer, I tried switching media frameworks (between cocoa and java for quicktime). I tried reinstalling an older version of java. Neither approach worked. I saw on an earlier post that you recommended downloading the QuickTime MPEG-2 component from the Apple website. But before recommending our students pay the money for this, I wanted to check in with you on this issue.

Please let me know if you need any additional information. One final comment, I’ve got the latest set up on my computer as well and am not experiencing the same problem (other than the fuzzy display because of my retina screen but that’s a whole other issue that has been reported in a separate post). The other faculty members aren’t experiencing the problems either.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to your thoughts on this matter.

When no player whatsoever can be created, it might be the case that the “32-bit” option has been reset (or not been set at all)? At least that is one thing I recently noticed on a similar Mac OS system.
In the Finder select the ELAN .app file and choose File->Get Info… (Cmd+I). Somewhere is the option “Run in 32-bit mode” (or something similar, I don’t have the exact phrasing at hand), make sure that this option is checked.

Thank you for your quick and helpful reply! I think this is the issue. I’ve relayed the information to the students who are experiencing this. If the problem persists, I’ll post again. But if not, thank you! As always, we appreciate this very much.
