Error message - can't create video player

I have recently downloaded Elan 5.2, but when I try to open an existing Elan file, I get the error message below and the video associated with file is not viewable in the Elan window.

Error message:
No player created for:

  • file:///C:/users/laura/documents/documents/school/syntax_semantics/Spelling.mp4
Could not create any media player for C:/users/laura/documents/documents/school/syntax_semantics/Spelling.mp4
JMMF player cannot handle the file: C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN5.2\jre\bin\MMFPlayer.dll : can’t find dependent libraries cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.
    quickTime/QTException
    javax.media.NoPlayerException: cannot find a player for : file: C:/users/laura/documents/documents/school/syntax_semantics/Spelling.mp4

Troubleshooting steps so far:

  • re-download the program, re-start computer
-make sure I have working versions of QuickTime, Java, VLC
-Make sure the video works in VLC
-The Elan file and video are in the same folder
-Remove and add the linked file into the Elan file (note when I do this I get the same error message when I add the new file in.)

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks,
Laura

Can you add which Windows Edition this is?

The important message in the output is “can’t find dependent libraries”. We had similar reports before and we thought we had fixed it by re-compiling the “MMFPlayer.dll” again on an older pc. It fixed the problem for some users but there are still reports of users running into this problem. Unfortunately the message doesn’t say which dependent libraries are missing. We’re trying to figure that out.
In the mean time, can you check if the fix mentioned here works for you too?

I have Windows 10 on my laptop. I will try the suggestion of pulling the dll file from the previous version an see if that works.

Yes, that previous suggestion worked. Thank you very much.

Good. It would still be useful to know what Edition of Windows 10 you have installed. We would like to figure out why it works on one Win 10 pc (like mine) and not on others. Maybe it depends on the Edition.
