I am facing an issue with my Elan regarding the find and replace function. Previously ( two weeks ago), it was working fine. But now, I cannot use it because a blank window appears when I am trying to use it. When I click on that window, it is the main window that displays. I would like to have some help about that please, it is urgent.
Could you maybe post a screenshot of the blank window? Do you think it is the find-and-replace window, but not fully initialized?
There might be relevant messages in the log (View->View Log…) after the blank window appeared? There is no need to post the entire log here, but maybe ‘error’ or ‘exception’ messages concerning the search are near the end of the log?
I assume this concerns the single file find-and-replace function?
Thanks for your reply. I have found out the solution. Here was the problem, it may seem weird, but may help people working with several screens :
I usually use an external monitor (a large screen) in plus of my laptop screen. I extend (instead of duplicating) my laptop’s screen on that external monitor. So, when I open Elan on my laptop screen, I slide its windows (main window, find-and-replace window…) to the external screen on which I usually work. But, the weird thing is that when I turn off the external screen, the Elan windows do not show up on my laptop screen, unless I slide them back from the external screen to my laptop screen.
Now, the reason why I was facing this issue was that the last time I used Elan on my external monitor, I had used the find-and-replace function whose window I had forgotten to slide back (contrary to the main window of my Elan software) to my laptop screen when I had finished. Consequently, the find-and-replace window got (virtually) stuck on the external screen (even if it was off). Since I am in the field now, I wanted to use the find-and-replace function, but it could not display on my laptop screen since I did not bring it back to that screen the last time I worked with it. Then, I managed to find another external screen in the field through which I brought that window back to my main screen. It is fine now.
Thanks for this update!
This is a known issue; dynamic, multi-monitor configurations should properly be dealt with. This probably concerns most windows of which the location and size are stored as preference settings.
Most of these settings are stored in a file named “elan.pfsx”, located in ELAN’s data and settings folder. If all else fails, this file could (temporarily) be moved outside of its folder before launching ELAN and windows will appear with at default locations. ‘elan.pfsx’ is an XML file, so could be edited, but since there’s no documentation of the settings, it might be a bit of a puzzle to find out which entry/entries to remove.
