Hello,
My lab has recently started using ELAN 6.1 for our coding purposes and I seem to have issues using the program. When I play the video in its entirety, the whole program will eventually freeze and I have to force quit ELAN in order to be able to click anything again. If I go frame-by-frame, I can manage to go through the video for a bit more time before it stops again. There also seems to be a bit of a delay when switching frames. Additionally, sometimes the media file won’t load and will say “Initializing” at the top before I have to force quit it and try again. I believe it may have something to do with the laptop I am using. I have a MacBook Pro with an Apple chip MacOS 11.2. I’m wondering if this may be causing my issues or if there is something else that could be causing them.
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
In principle, as far as we can see, ELAN works on the Apple chip and new OS.
But in the mean time it has become clear that ELAN 6.1 has at least one problem that 6.0 didn’t have. I don’t know if this explains your problems (especially the freezing in the initialization phase). The new problem only occurs in video-only situations (so, no .wav file attached). You can try if the following improves the situation: launch ELAN without a file, disable the Signal Viewer via View->Viewer->Signal Viewer, then open your file with the video.
If this doesn’t make a difference, we’ll have to investigate further.

Hey!
Thank you so much for the fast reply. It’s working better now but the video pop-up screen is now very tiny and there’s a blue frame around it. I’m not able to get the blue to go away or expand the video which makes it hard to code. The video also still lags, unfortunately.
Thanks!
Hi,
It seems there is (also) something else going on than what I expected/guessed. If I understand correctly you can either not resize the video area at all or when resizing, the blue frame does not disappear?
If you right-click the video and select Player Info from the context menu, what media framework is reported? If you open the log (View->View Log…) are there clear, media player related, error messages in there? No need to post the entire contents here, in case of doubt you can send the contents to me by mail (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl).
Hello,
The video does not resize at all and the blue frame does not disappear.

Thank you!
Hi,
I’m trying to understand the “not resizing” issue; can you drag the divider just below the row of play/pause etc. buttons. If so, does the tab pane (top-right of the window) resize (including its width)?
Given the other problems you mentioned, it would be useful if you could send me the file “elan0.log” (and, if there, elan1.log etc.), located in ELAN’s data and preference folder. Currently I have no explanation for the problems you describe.
Hi,
I can’t drag down a divider, there is no option to do so. If I try to drag the video nothing happens, the video is stuck in the bottom corner of a blue frame.
I can’t seem to locate the data and preference folder. How can I send it to you?
Thank you again!
That’s peculiar, can you upload a screenshot of the window without divider?
Did you follow the link to the manual and its section concerning ELAN’s data folder? (In the Finder you have to hold down the Option key, click the Go menu and then select Library (from there Preferences->ELAN)).
