ELAN freezes when opening/interacting with Interlinearization mode on Windows 11

Hi all,

I’m helping troubleshoot an intermittent ELAN issue on a colleague’s Windows machine and would appreciate any advice.

The issue is that ELAN sometimes becomes unresponsive and has to be closed through Task Manager. This seems especially likely to happen when ELAN opens directly into Interlinearization mode, or when the user starts working in Interlinearization mode soon after opening the file.

A temporary workaround seems to be:

  1. Open the ELAN project.

  2. Switch first to Annotation mode.

  3. Play a short/random segment to confirm that the media is active.

  4. Then switch back to Interlinearization mode and continue working.

After doing this, ELAN appears to behave more reliably. This makes me wonder whether the issue is related to ELAN/media/timeline initialisation when Interlinearization mode is the first active mode.

The problem does not appear to be caused by general resource limitations. The machine is fairly new, bought last year, and has the following specs:

  • Model: Dell XPS 8960

  • OS: Windows 11 Education, version 24H2

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-14700, 2.10 GHz

  • RAM: 32 GB

  • Storage: 954 GB total, around 366 GB free

  • Graphics: 12 GB graphics card / multiple GPUs installed

  • ELAN version: 6.9

Task Manager does not show unusually high CPU, RAM, or disk usage when ELAN is open. In one check, ELAN was using only around 145 MB of memory, with overall memory use around 46–52%, CPU around 5%, and disk around 1%.

The issue was first suspected to be related to multi-monitor use because it often happened when moving between ELAN and another application such as Word or Excel. However, it also occurs even when ELAN stays on one screen. The stronger pattern now seems to be related to Interlinearization mode being active immediately after opening the file.

Has anyone encountered similar freezing behaviour with ELAN 6.9 on Windows 11, particularly when opening directly into Interlinearization mode? Are there known issues with workspace/layout state, media initialisation, Java/display handling, or Interlinearization mode on recent Windows systems?

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Hello,

Thank you for the detailed write up, really helpful.

The log files might have captured what’s happening at the point of the freeze. Can you kindly share the log file(s) to me (Divya.Kanekal AT mpi.nl) , as the UI might not be responsive to go through View -View Log, you can be find the files elan0.log (elan1.log etc.) in the ELAN data folder.

Also, could you check: under Edit > Preferences > Platform/OS , what is selected for “Extraction of audio samples from video for audio visualization” ?
