Hello!
I’m trying to do an export to a “WebAnnotation JSON” file using ELAN 6.4 M1 on a Mac and it’s freezing before bringing up the export dialog.
It has randomly worked once or twice after hanging up initially.
Can you advise or offer support on how to fix this?
I also tried using ELAN 6.2 M1 and have had the same behavior.
Thanks!
Hi,
I’m afraid we’ll have to look into the log messages, to see if there are clear error messages.
If the freezing is not preventing you from choosing View->View Log... that would be the best option. Error messages should be towards the end of the log.
If it is not possible anymore to open any menu, then you’ll have to find the latest elan_x_.log in the ELAN data folder.
There’s no need to paste complete logging output here, only if there are clear error messages that might be related to the export. (In case of doubt, files can be send to han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl)

Thank you!
I wasn’t able to choose View->View Log... so I find the .log file and I’ve just emailed it to you since I don’t know how to make any sense of it.
Look forward to hearing from you here or there!
Update: after exchange of a log file (no errors) and an EAF file (relatively large), it appeared that ELAN didn’t actually freeze but that creating the export dialog simply takes a lot of time in case there are many annotations. The export dialog contains a preview to support the configuration of the output and creation of the preview appears to be very slow when there are many annotations. This is something we have to address in a future version.
To avoid the problem in the current version, this can be done:
- make sure to have a time interval selected, e.g. by activating an annotation
- open the export dialog and tick the
Limit to current selection checkboxand Update the preview
- for the next export action make sure at least one annotation is within the selected time interval, open the dialog, configure the settings and deselect the
Limit etc. checkbox before clicking Export
- select the checkbox again before closing the window
