ELAN freezes about once per day

Hi all, running ELAN 6.2 to write my thesis and it always freezes/stops responding. This happens about once per day. I’m doing a lot of transcription work currently (audio only) and this is extremely annoying. I’m running a brand new computer so it’s not a memory issue.
It’s quite frustrating as for some reason the autosave does not work either. I have to manually save the file every few minutes, and naturally this means when ELAN crashes I will lose a few minutes of work (or more if I’ve forgotten to save).

Is this a common issue? Is anyone else having this problem? Are there any tips on reducing the frequency of this?

Hi Rachael, maybe you can add on which operating system this is?
It would be good if we could at least figure out why autosave doesn’t work on your system (in principle this seems to work, at least on my system). Maybe there is useful information in the log? (Via View->View Log… or better via the log file itself. You don’t have to post it here but could send it to me, if you want: han.sloetjes(at)mpi.nl)

Hi Rachael. My lab (where we use macOS 10.13.16) has had a similar problem. I’ll be in the middle of categorizing ING tokens in the annotation window when suddenly ELAN will just quit. And then all of my unsaved progress will be lost due to the fact that autosave seems to be malfunctioning. I’ve taken to saving my work every 5 minutes–just to make sure I don’t lose anything significant.

Unfortunately, I am currently unaware of any solutions to this problem, but I’d love to know if other people have figured it out.

Best of luck,

Valerie
