ELAN doesnt work at all on Windows 10

First i want to inform you, that English isnt my first language. Have Mercy with me, when i make some grammar mistakes.

My actual Problem is, that Elan 6.2 does not work on my Win 10 Pc. I mean nothing works. When i add a Video to work, first the Programm shows some Artifacts, the icons are kinda overlapping and then it freezes while the i can still hear the Video background. After that it crashs without any notification. Do you have any Idea how i can fix that ? I made a fresh Win Install but that doesnt helped either.

I noticed that the Programm “double starts” when i want work with it. The Application starts a new Tasks in the Background, when its already used ? Is that normal ?

Thank you.

Hi, no problem, English isn’t my first language either.

I may be wrong, but it sounds a bit like there is a problem with loading a/this video. What kind of video is it (what type or format)? Do you see the same effect if you e.g. open the example eaf of this example set?
If so, the next step would to see if there are relevant error messages in the log file.

I’m not sure if I understand what you mean by “double starts”; is this based on what you see in the Task Manager? And/or are there two (empty) windows if you launch ELAN? I’m not familiar with that, it doesn’t sound like a normal launch.

Thx for the fast reply. I have no clue where the Log File should be. With double start i mean that i saw it in the Task Manager that Elan was running double. Tried your Video too but it crasht without any warning etc. The Video that i use is a mp4 File too. I dont think the File is the Problem ?

Indeed, it doesn’t look like the video file is the problem.

The log file is named elan0.log (and/or elan1.log etc.) and can be found in ELAN’s own data folder. On Win10 this is probably something like C:\Users\<your_login>\.elan_data
No need to paste the entire contents here, only if there are clear error messages in it, these can be copied here. Otherwise (and it is not unlikely that the messages aren’t that clear at all) it is better to email the file to me (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl).

Oppened the two Files. There are a lot of Warnings on the left side and some Error displayed on the right side. Should i copy and paste the Warnings and put it in here or just send you a Mail ?

Maybe first send it to me, then I’ll have a look to see what is relevant for this issue?

The warning messages in the log files are general warnings that are not related to the crashes. There is only one message at the end of one of the log files that seems to indicate a problem in the media player:

NATIVE: MMFPlayer.Invoke: failed to process the media event (-1072875854, 0xC00D36B2)

But since missing a media event isn’t that uncommon and is usually harmless, I’m not sure if this identifies the problem. Apart from this message everything in the log looks the same as what I see on my Win10. So, I’m not sure.

There are two things you can try to verify if the media player is the problem:

  1. Launch ELAN, choose File->New… select only a .wav file (e.g. the one you downloaded) and click OK. Does this lead to a crash?
  2. Launch ELAN, go to Edit->Preferences->Edit Preferences->Platform/OS and select the JavaFX Media Framework, click Apply and open the example file again. Does this crash?

This can help to identify the cause of the problem.

When i tried to follow your Advice, that happens.

Can you see that the image is “buggy”?

That happens with almost everything in ELAN.

Yes, it seems something is seriously wrong with the graphics. I don’t know what. So, something similar occurs if you try advice 1, the wave-only scenario? Or is the crash happening again in that case?

In the situation of the screenshot, is it still possible to tick the Use Windows Look And Feel checkbox and Apply the change?

Opened the WAV File you send. Applied the Checkboc and still the same.

Closed ELAN and there was another open ELAN Task.

The change in the Look&Feel requires a relaunch of ELAN, but I guess the problem is still the same (I assume the screenshot is from before changing the Look&Feel)?

It might be the problem has to do with e.g. the driver of the video graphics or connected hardware or something system specific. Are you using a single screen while doing these tests, or dual monitors?

After the relaunch its the same yes. My Notebook is connected to a external Screen. Only the Monitor is used. It also happens when i use the Built in Screen from the Notebook. All my drivers are up to date and i disabeld OC from the GPU. That specific Problem only occours in ELAN. Every other Programm runs fine.

Yes, I’m just guessing for possible explanations here. Obviously this is not the usual behavior of ELAN on Windows (or any other platform), so I’m just thinking of what could be causing this.

Hey, i dont want to be impatient but do you have any Ideas what could i do. Have to work with ELAN and im kinda Lost here…

I’m sorry, I don’t really have an idea what can be done here.
There might be crash logs in ELAN’s install folder, with file names containing “…pidnnnn.log”. If so, there might be indications in there. There might also be error logs in the Windows Logs (category Application or System), as shown in the Event Viewer.

Since the ‘painting’ and positioning of the elements on the screen is mixed up, my guess is there must be some incompatibility with a setting concerning the graphics system. Even if no other applications are effected, it might be that ELAN’s Java graphics system is effected. But I don’t know which setting or software it could be, I’m sorry.

I finaly found the Problem… It was “Riva Tuner Statistic Server” in combination with “MSI Afterburner”. Closed the Tasks and the bugs were gone. Dont know why this Programms caused that but nevermind, now ELAN works. Yay :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Great that this is solved! I’m not familiar with those utilities but apparently they are about (the performance of) the graphics card and video display. Strange that these only seem to interfere with ELAN’s rendering, but now that you know this, there is at least a solution or workaround at hand.
