ELAN 6.8 crashed and doesn't open video anymore

Hello,

I just started using ELAN and everything worked great, until the spectogram had disappeared (while the option was active) and I tried to get the spectogram to show again. I tried to get it to work by going to Preferences > Platform/OS > and then ticking the AV…something option (I forget what it read). Shortly after, the program froze, and I had to force quit it. Now, every file I open (including new files) just open up frozen.

The video’s I used are located on an external harddrive, and when I unplug it and select an ELAN file, the program opens just fine without the video and with all the annotations intact. But as soon as it needs to open a video it freezes. I wonder what to do, or if anyone ever experienced something similar.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best wishes,

Hello,

There has been incidents and it’s known that using AV Foundation for extracting audio samples from video sometimes causes freezing issues. It would be best to untick the AV foundation and select either none or ffmpeg option.

Our advice would be to extract the wav file from the video file and add it as a linked file ( Edit → Linked Files → Linked Media Files) .
Then the added wav file will be used for visualisation of audio.

Best Regards

Hello,

Thank you. If anyone encounters this problem as well, I might have a way to “unfreeze” ELAN. I understood that I need to uncheck AV foundation. At first, I wondered how I could do so given the program freezes upon opening. Then I realized I could still open ELAN when the video it connects to isn’t available (in my case, it was on an external harddrive that was unconnected). I opened the file and unchecked AF foundation (selected ‘none’), then closed the program. When I connected the external hard drive, ELAN opened without problems.

I’m glad this worked. Thanks for the tip and very prompt response!

Best wishes,
Benda

Glad to know that it worked!
