ELAN 6.2 crashes after update in MacOS10.13.16

Hello! After updating our lab computers, ELAN has been crashing frequently and unexpectedly. The auto-save feature seems to be affected by this as well, as ELAN will not only crash but also delete any work not saved manually.

Any information about this issue or possible solutions to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Attached is an image of the error message that keeps popping up.

Hello,

Thank you for attaching screenshot of the log.
I have ELAN 6.2 on MacOS 11.5.1. I tested the auto save (backup) feature and the feature works for me even when I don’t save the current file manually every-time.
The error message in the log ( NSInvalidArgumentException) and the difference in the OS version (mine v/s yours) point to me that the issue could be occurring because of the OS version. If one of the other machines in your lab has OS version 11.5 , Perhaps you can try to run ELAN 6.2 on that machine without the above issue ? If it works fine, possible solution could be to upgrade to that version.

Best Regards
Divya

Hi,

Just out of interest, when this type of crash occurs, with the same highlighted error message, are there usually more than one videos loaded (either in the same window or in multiple open windows)? Or, in other words, does this occur too if only one video is loaded?
The message is quite specific and looking at the code I would say that what is described can’t actually happen (but I can be wrong of course). The error seems to be linked to playing a selection, especially to letting the player stop as accurately as possible at the end of the selection. There has been a change in this behavior in ELAN 6.1, so maybe in ELAN 6.0 this does not occur. Never mind if this issue has already been solved e.g. by an update of the OS version.

Hello, Han!

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I am not sure the video files are the problem. We are using ELAN for linguistic analysis, so we’re using WAV. audio files rather than video files.

Hi,

Thanks, that’s good to know.
In case your problems haven’t been solved by the suggestions made so far, you might want to try an alternative, “fix”, release of 6.2 we created last week. There have been several problem reports and though we do not exactly know what causes these problems, we reverted two changes made after 6.0 to see if this makes a difference. Not visible on our download page yet, but here is the link in case you want to try:
ELAN_6-2_fix_mac.zip.

I am also having the same Issue. Did you get any solution?

Hi,

We received several messages from users who had no crashes anymore with the above mentioned “fix” version. That version seems to be the best option to try at the moment. It’s not clear to me whether you have the same issue while using the original 6.2 version or the “fix” version?
