I’m a new user of ELAN which I want to use for my master’s thesis.
I have both the 5.9 and 6.1. versions installed (MAC OS Catalina 10.15.7) and I have massive problems with both. Videos (mov or mp4) around 88-100 MB in size load into the program, but as soon as I want to annotate, either video or audio freezes (one runs without the other). I can’t even just run the video+audio through without one of them (or both completely) stopping. Also, everything
freezes for up to 20 sec frequently - but not the whole program, as I can save the files meanwhile (THANK GOD).
This adds at least 10 times to the working time, if the program doesn’t crash as well. The resolution of the videos is already halved, less is not possible for my investigation.
AND I just found out that if I open and save a file in the 6.1 version, the next time it opens in the 5.9 version - HOW?
I am extremely frustrated and desperate because the deadline for my work is getting closer.

Unfortunately we have several reports of mac users experiencing problems with 6.1. So far we haven’t found out what the cause of the problem is. Any information that can help us discover the source of the malfunctioning would be helpful. Apparently when the freezing/slowness starts you can still access the menu, so maybe you can send the log to me (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl) as it is in the “frozen” state? The log can be accessed via View->View Log…
Also, if you open ActivityMonitor when ELAN is in this frequently freezing state, while ELAN is not doing anything (not playing a selection in a loop e.g.), is the CPU usage down to 1 or 2 % or less?
It would be most useful if the problems could be linked to a specific action (playing a selection, maybe in a loop, or stopping the player while playing a selection and then starting normal playback again ,or anything else).
I’m not aware of exactly the same problems in 5.9, but I know some fixes in playing a selection have been made between 5.9 and 6.0 and some more changes in that area in 6.1 (to achieve tighter play selection behavior). Some users have problems with 6.1 they don’t have with 6.0, so you might want to try 6.0 instead of 5.9 (and instead of 6.1 if the problems don’t appear in 6.0)?
On macOS eaf files aren’t automatically opened in the latest version of ELAN. You can try to change the file association in the Finder (that doesn’t always seem to work globally, for all eaf files). Otherwise it is best to open the ELAN version you want to use and open the file from there (maybe from the Recent Files menu).
