Hello,
When I open videos in ELAN with a storage aspect ratio (SAR) that differs from the display aspect ratio (DAR), the SAR is taken into account for the display, not the DAR (more - basic - information about SAR and DAR can be found on Wikipedia for example with keywords “Pixel aspect ratio” - sorry I can’t post links as I am a “new user” or at least “newly registered” on this forum!).
This results in my videos being anamorphosed in the player (most of the time, they are shown as 4/3 instead of 16/9 which is a bit annoying).
Is this something that could be modified so that DAR has the priority on SAR in ELAN?
I am running ELAN 6.3 on Windows 10 and tried with 2 Media Frameworks: “Java - DirectShow Framework” and “VLC Player Libray”.
Many thanks!
Coralie
Hello Coralie,
I’m not sure if this is possible for all/most media frameworks; that information may or may not be accessible to ELAN. Most frameworks have methods/functions like GetNativeVideoSize or GetNaturalVideoSize or similar and methods to get the aspect ratio; it isn’t always clear whether pixel aspect ratio is taken into account. And it may or may not be possible to change this setting. We can have another look at this.
Currently, to deal with this, the video’s context menu has a Force Aspect Ratio option to allow the user to tell ELAN what the correct or expected aspect ratio is. The list of options will be extended in the next release to also include ratios for vertical or portrait videos.

Hello Han,
Thank you for mentioning the Force Aspect Ratio option. I will use it for the time being.
And great to read you are going to extend the list of options to vertical or portrait videos.
Best,
Coralie
