Dark Mode (Accessibility Request)

I was wondering if there is any way of approximating a dark theme in ELAN. I’m working on a lot of segmentation and transcription right now, and the bright grey window makes it difficult to stay on task for as long as I would like to without quickly experiencing fatigue. I’ve tried switching to High Contrast mode in Windows 10, but it doesn’t integrate well with certain elements of ELAN’s UI (i.e., it will black out the contents of some frames, radio button labels, etc.)

Has anyone else experienced similar issues, and is there a workaround that worked for you? If not, as a feature request to the developers, could customizable UI colours be implemented in some future update? Thanks very much!

Hi,

Thanks, we had a few similar questions/requests, so it is on the wish list.
From a developer’s point of few, it would be best if a “dark mode” was supported by the JDK’s (Java Developer Kit) of the supported operating systems. As long as this is not the case, it would be ideal if one coding approach in ELAN would work for all operating systems and all supported Look&Feel variants.

I hadn’t tried the High Contrast settings yet; it seems already quite close but, indeed, there are elements that (almost) disappear. Nevertheless, adopting the system’s (current) default foreground and background colors in some of our viewers, would make this mode already more compatible with ELAN.

Thanks for the reply, Han.

This morning, I found an acceptable workaround: In Windows 10’s accessibility settings, there is a way to globally invert all screen colours, but it’s buried in the settings for Magnifier, rather than High Contrast or Colour Settings. This resulted in a dark screen when working inside of ELAN, with none of the rendering issues I had when using High Constrast mode. Hopefully this comes in handy for other users as well.

Yes thanks, that’s most useful additional information!
