I’m trying to set up a large project and have decided to use tier sets. I have turned on tier sets in the preferences and can make tier set labels in the “Edit Tier Set” menu. But when I try to add tiers, the “Add” button is greyed out. I’ve tried it for the current file, another file and domain. I’m just unable to access the tiers that I want to comprise my tier sets. Help!
After selecting the current file, or another file or domain, do you see the tiers listed in the table? Or is that, that doesn’t work? In case you see a list of tiers, selecting at least one tier in the list should activate the Add button, if all’s well (but maybe it is that, that doesn’t work?).
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I am having the same issue. I have tried the following steps with “work with tier sets” option both on and off:
- Go to edit > edit tier sets
- Use “+” button on left to create a tier set label
- Use “edit” button on right to add tiers to tier set
- Use “+” button on “edit tier set” window to select file
Regardless of whether I choose “use currently opened file,” “select files from browser” and select the current file, or select files from domain" and create a domain using current file, I see no options for tiers to select for inclusion in a tier set.
Not sure if this is the case, but we had reports about that last window (with the options “currently opened file” etc.) not being sized correctly, so that the table with tiers was not visible. Resizing the window, especially vertically, then made the table with the listed tiers visible. Apologies if this is not the problem (which ELAN version is this in?).
Thanks again Han! I tried resizing it and still no luck. I am using the most current version of ELAN 6.2. Just updated automatically this morning in fact.
Could the issue be that I am saving my .eaf files in their own folder, not the default location? As far as I can tell all preference files are also saving there.

I thought it would be good to add the screenshots to see if we are missing something in the analysis of the issue.
Do you see Add Tiers window as above ?
Then, if the window is vertically expanded, the window would look like below where you can select the tiers from any of the file type options.
Or is it the case that even if you expand the window and see the tiers selection panel, but the tiers doesn’t get listed at all ?
Eaf file location should not matter actually. ELAN latest version is 6.7, you could give that a try.
