Audio not running smoothly

Hello,

depending on where I am in the recording, my audio does not run smoothly. When I select a section and press the play button, either nothing happens for a few seconds and then it runs normally or the cursor moves and the picture runs but there is no sound for about a second (the time always varies a bit) so the first words of the section are missing. When the sound starts after that certain time, it is often offset from the cursor on the oscillogram I see. The sound is then 1-2 seconds ahead of the cursor, so at the end I often hear some of the sound that is outside my marked section.

At the beginning of the recording there are no problems but around minute 10 it starts to hang every now and then and around minute 30 it gets worse. I have already reinstalled elan but that did not change anything.

Do you have any experience with problems like this? This seems very strange to me.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

That sounds like a quite peculiar problem and I have no idea what could be going on.
Can you add some information about your operating system and which media framework is in use (right click on the video and choose Player Info)? And do you see this effect with all longer videos?

Hello,

my operation system is MacOS Monterey 12.3.1 and as media framework it shows me “AV Foundation Player with Native Rendering”.
I’ve tried with several videos (all of them between 40 and 50 minutes long) but the problem was always more or less the same.

Thanks for this information. Can you also add some information about the video files, their format and how they are encoded? Do you only have a video file linked or also a .wav file extracted from the video?

I have still no clue what could be wrong. You could try other player frameworks (via Edit->Preferences->Platform/OS, files need to be reopened for the change to take effect), but in most cases the AV Foundation player performs best.

I’ve been having similar issues with this as well but on PC for me. Not sure if this is happening after the 6.4 update for you though @feli. Everything is feeling kinda choppy.

Thanks for this; here as well it would be good to have some more information about the type/format and number of files that are linked. And, if e.g. the Spectrogram is visible, whether or not it makes a difference if it is hidden (via the View->Viewer menu).

Hello,
I hope this is the right information now. The format of the video is MPEG-4-film and the video file is aligned. I use both the aligned video file and a .wav file for the sound. Using another framework or hiding the spectrogram doesn’t make any difference (nor does the version of Elan). But I’ve now tried with video files that are not aligned and they seem to work fine.

Hello,

I’m not sure if I understand what an aligned video is in this context; is that a video that is given an offset to synchronize it with the .wav file?
Anyway, since you have a .wav file, you could try if making it the leading media file (the first in the list in Edit->Linked Files...) makes any (positive) difference (if you haven’t tried that already).
