Annotation values for transcription lost after opening new tiers

Hi,
I am teaching my Master’s students how to use ELAN, and today we experienced rather odd difficulties that I would really like to share with you. I first taught them to transcribe using the annotation mode, and it was a success; then I showed them how to annotate, using controlled vocabularies, linguistic types etc. The strangest thing happened. At the beginning of the class, their annotation values for the transcription units were there, and then when they added new categories, they were all gone! The tiers were still there, but the annotations were gone. I’ve never seen something like this before. Could you please help? Thank you!
PS : they all used the final version of ELAN. This issue occurred both with mac OS and windows. Thank you!!

Hi,
That sounds strange indeed, I don’t recall having seen similar reports. Since you never seem to have witnessed this before and since the annotations were gone on all computers, it sounds like this is something that can be reproduced. E.g. does it depend on the categories that are being added? I would still have no idea how annotations could disappear as a result of that, but if we have a scenario that can be reproduced, we can probably find out.
If you’re not able to create the same effect, e.g. in a newly created file, there might be useful information in the log files of involved pc’s. They are named ‘elan0.log’, elan1.log’ etc. and can be found in the ELAN data folder. Maybe you can send a few to me (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl)?
