- Description : The Archive of the Warao language is a collection of annotated multimedia recordings of Warao, a language isolate spoken in Venezuela and Guyana. The collection was produced by Dr. Konrad Rybka and two student assistants between 2016 and 2019. It was developed in collaboration with the inhabitants of Waramuri—a Warao community in the Moruca River area, in the Barima-Waini region of northwestern Guyana—and with the permission and support of the village council of Waramuri and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs. The data were collected during several fieldtrips, which were part of two projects: a two-year postdoctoral project investigating linguistic and non-linguistic patterns of contact in the Guianas carried out at the University of California and supported by the Rubicon grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (project number 446-15-012), and a one-year postdoctoral follow-up project exploring interethnic contact in Amazonia under the theme “Circulation of objects and images” carried out at the Musée de quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris. The depositors are indebted to the Warao participants, the funding organizations, the institutions that hosted the projects, and The Language Archive for their help in the creation of this resource. The collection contains recordings of several different genres, such as traditional songs and stories, instructional narratives, experimental data, elicitation sessions, and translation sessions; at this stage (October, 2018), the collection contains little conversational data, a reflection of the fact that Warao is hardly used on a daily basis in Waramuri. The primary data are predominantly in the form of audio-visual recordings except for elicitation and translation sessions, which were usually not video-taped. Annotated Elan files with Warao transcriptions, morphemic division, glosses, and English translations will be uploaded to the archive by the end of 2019. The names of the bundles are coded in the following way: 1. First four letters stand for the name of the location where the recording was made (e.g. wrmr = Waramuri) 2. Following eight digits correspond to the date of the recordgins in the format: year month day 3. The following letters encode the type of session (e.g. eli = elicitation, trans = translation). 4. The last two digits number consequtive sessions recorded on the same day.
