- Description : Baure belongs to the southern branch of the Arawak language family and is closely related to the Mojo languages Trinitario and Ignaciano. The Baure language consists of three dialects; Baure (Baures and its surrounding communities), Carmelito (El Carmen) and Joaquiniano (San Joaquín).The Baure language shows some interesting typological features, such as classifiers, a high number of place adverbs or demonstratives, and specific interrogative and subordinate constructions, which represent the complex characteristics of an Arawakan language.

El idioma baure se compone tres dialectos; baure (Baures y las comunidades alrededor), carmelito (El Carmen) y joaquiniano (San Joaquín). La lengua baure muestra unas características tipológicas muy interesantes, por ejemplo los clasificadores, un gran número de adverbios locales o demostrativos, y construcciones particulares de interrogaciones y frases subordinadas, las cuales representan las características complejas de un idioma arawak.

MD is a good Baure speaker but not that fluent, due to lack of practice. He is very helpful in transcribing and translating Baure-texts. MD has very good knowledge of Baure history and customs. He knows how to play traditional music on the flute and used to work as a teacher of culture in the local school.
