EPISODE 3: Translation: version (Counter: 198 - 248) theme (Counter: 248 - 275) (Side A / TRC 9010 / Counter: 198 - 275) COMMENTS: The stimuli for the two translation tasks were devised in such a way that they would meet the following requirements: - be short, intelligible to the informant - contain basic vocabulary and simple structures - provide opportunity through the content for subsequent discussion Version was L2-L1 translation and theme was L1- L2 translation. These tasks partly inspired by the Tilburg ESF team and partly by previous work in Aix, provided a measure of the competence of the learners in French. They were also applied to the Moroccans studied in Tilburg. One of the side effects of the task was that instead of translating in the target language a question or an order given as stimuli, the informant would answer directly in the source language. Then the researchers had to clarify the situation and re- mind the informant of the task instruction. Thus, this task provided a case of "double enunciation" and provided some training in metalinguistic awa- reness to the informants.
