ProjectDescription : Giving cognition a hand: Linking spatial cognition to linguistic expression in native and late learners of sign language and bimodal bilinguals (funded by NWO VICI)
This project investigates whether using linguistic expressions of space which allows iconic representations influence signers' spatial event cognition in different ways than that of speakers of spoken languages. Here we asked deaf and hearing participants (adults and children) to describe pictures showing two objects with different spatial relations (e.g., pen on book). During their descriptions, we also traced their eye-gaze patterns to understand if the language modality has an influence on attention allocation. The participants were also asked to narrate short video clip (about 3 minutes) to their addressee. We also conducted memory tasks and other tasks to get insights about their visual-spatial abilities in general (e.g., Corsi-block tapping task, digit span task, etc.).
