Photographs of Me Dam Me Phi 2008
Photographs taken on 31st January 2012 of the Me Dam Me Phi festival held at Gargaon Palace, Sibsagar district, Assam. The festival was presided over by Tileswar Mohan and Stephen Morey was one of the chief guests. The ceremony included sacrifice of chickens and prayers to various Gods. The photos show the preparations and the altars prepared for the sacrifice.
Bhadreswar Baruah house

These photographs include cultural items such as fishtraps, bow, and also the Rvn Phi Dam, the portion of a traditional Ahom house where prayers are made to the ancestors (Me Dam Me Phi). The prayers in the Rvn Phi Dam are the origin of the modern festival of Me Dam Me Phi that is celebrated on 31st January in Assam.

These photographs show the sacred site, called Jantedhunga, which is a major place in Puma myth and a significant reference point in the Puma tradition. According to the myth, in ancient times a marriage procession turned to stone. People say that this can still be seen in the rock formation.
