This session was made in the wood. Artem Solodikov was preparing firewood sawing buscket willows "tal'nik" with a petrol-powered saw. He saws off a trunck and saws it up into shorter pieces. When he has enough, he puts the firewood on the special back pack that is called "ponjaga" (a metall frame with straps).
Unloading a truck
This session was made by the way to the traditional fishing camp "rybalka" at the transit point Sanuch. The day before people loaded a truck with food and other stuff to send it in advance to Sanuch. People should be carried by a helicopter to Sanuch and then to the corresponding fishing camp in several flights. After the helicopter had landed, the truck with load came. The passengers began to unload the truck and to sort sacks and boxes. It was rather long, maybe a half an hour. After they finished it, they began to load corresponding load to the helicopter for the first flight.
Inspecting the net
This session was made at the lake Buroe, not far from Manych fishing camp. Nikolay Fomitch Ichanga came to check his net, that he does every day. First he loosened the net on the other side of the lake, then he takes out fish caught in his net. This time there were five fishes. After that he sets again his net. At that time his seven years old grandson Danil begins fishing with a spoon-bait. He cann't throw the spoon-bait far enough and Nikolay Fomitch shows him how to do it. But they don't catch anything in this way.
One end of a fishing net has been tied to a wooden stake put in the ground on this side of a small lake. Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga is walking along the other bank of the lake making his way to the other end of the net. He loosens that other end of the net which was fastened to a fallen tree.
Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga is back on this side of the lake. He pulls part of the fishing net on to the land. He kills a fish (a kind of salmon) – which is caught in the net – by hitting it with a wooden stick on its head. Then he takes the fish out of the net and throws it on an empty sack spread out in the grass.
NFI pulls more of the net on to the land. Two more fishes (a kind of salmon too) occur in the net. Both of them are already dead. NFI takes them out of the net and throws them also on the empty sack.
Step by step NFI pulls the net on to the land. He takes out another two fishes caught in the net. In the end NFI has gathered five fishes which will be enough to provide lunch for the people living in the camp at the moment.
Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga is again on the other side of the lake. He is pulling the empty fishing net back into the water and fixes its end again to the fallen tree to which it had been fastened before. In the evening he will come back here in order to take out the fish which has gone into the net during the day. He will then fix the net for the night.
A boy (Danil Vadimovich Solodikov) is trying to catch fish using a simple fishing line with some bait at its end. He is standing at the bank of the small lake throwing the bait into the water. He didn’t do it well, so Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga – who had been watching – is starting to instruct him how to do it better. NFI throws the end with the bait into the water and then hands over the line to the boy. He tells the boy to pull the line slowly. Having lit a cigarette he takes the line back from the boy.
Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga throws the bait into the water again, then he pulls back the line. He hands over the end with the bait to the boy telling him to try and throw it himself into the water. NFI steps back in order to watch the boy.
Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga has the fishing line back in his hands. He throws the end with the bait into the water some steps away from the first place. He pulls back the line. Again he throws the end with the bait into the water. No fish takes the bait.
Nikolaj Fomich Ichanga makes another attempt throwing the fishing line. No fish takes the bait. He pulls back the line, the line got tangled. NFI tries to disentangle it.
Breaking in a horse
This session was made at the traditional fishing camp "rybalka" at the Manych river. Almost all men of the Solodikovs participated in the process of breaking in a horse. At first all "wild" (not trained) horses were driven into a pen. Then one of he men catched with a lasso a horse that should be broken in and took it out of the pen. At the open place men whiped the horse with long twigs. Then the horse was fastened and stayed fastened for a long time. The men let the other horses out. This "wild" horses came to visit this fastened one during all evening, in the night and during the folowing day. Sometimes they began to fight. In this case they were driven off.
A light and a dark horse are coming downhill. They join a white horse which is tied to a wooden stake. Vadim, younger brother of Artiom Nikolaevich Solodikov (ANS), appears. He is the one in the family who usually breaks in the horses to harness. Vadim unties the white horse and guides it into a fenced area. The two other horses follow. ANS joins Vadim. They close the fence with a rope. Leontij, another younger brother of ANS, is also around.
Vadim takes a long stick. At the end of it he fixes a rope with a noose. He tries to come close to the light horse’s head with the end of the stick so that the noose will glide around the horse’s neck. It takes Vadim a little while until the noose finally sits around the horse’s neck and contracts.
The horse tries to get rid of the rope. Vadim pulls the rope. Leontij helps him. Another man (Nikolai Fomich Ichanga), ANS and Stanislav, oldest son of Vadim, join in to pull the rope. Vadim takes a long stick and hits the horse from behind. The men drive the horse out of the fence to an open place nearby.
Vadim goes on hitting the horse strongly on his backside and hind legs in order to subjugate it and get it to accept the bridle. The horse tries to get away with all its might. Three times it falls down to the ground. Every time Vadim hits it forcing it to stand up again. Then it falls down totally exhausted. Vadim takes the bridle and puts it around the horse’s head. After that he forces the horse again to stand up hitting it hard.
The men pull strongly at the rope standing in front of the horse, Vadim hits the horse from behind. Finally the horse follows the men. It is guided to a wooden stake to which it is then tied. Leontij comes with an ax and hammers the stake deeper into the ground. Then everybody leaves the place except from Leontij who keeps watching the horse.
The dark horse, which is free to run about, comes close, putting its nose to the nose of the tied up horse.
A horse that has just been broken in to harness is pulling at the rope with which it is tied to a wooden stake. Another horse, which is free to run about, is standing by its side trying to ease it, touching its nose with its own nose.
